Ashlan Vincent graduated from North Carolina State University with her Bachelor’s in Psychology with a minor in Women & Gender Studies, and University of North Carolina at Charlotte with her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2021. Ashlan is a North Carolina board-certified Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and is affiliated with the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). Ashlan has experience working with children, teenagers, and adults in a private practice setting. She has worked with individuals managing complex trauma, depression, anxiety, mood/behavioral issues, self-harm, and chronic suicidal thoughts. She also has a special interest in working with maternal mental health. Ashlan has utilized diverse techniques that include expressive arts, narrative, non-directive and directive play, cognitive-behavioral, and trauma-focused therapy. As a therapist she aligns with the existential-humanistic school of thought, which focuses on helping clients find meaning in their lives as well as separating “problem behaviors” from the self. Ashlan works with children as young as 4 years old up to older adulthood. Young children, ranging from 4-10 depending on their personal developmental level and needs in therapy, are encouraged to participate in play therapy where the child can fully express themselves in the language that is most familiar to them. She also brings in a deep understanding of how gender, sexuality, race, and societal pressures play a part in how individuals interact with their broader society. She believes that in order to understand the person, you have to understand the context they are in. In this way, much of her work with clients integrates multiple schools of thought to find the best fit for that individual and their specific treatment goals.
Lisa draws from several therapeutic approaches, but leans heavily on bottom-up approaches that help integrate the body and brain. She may initially use a brain-based approach such as CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) to highlight ways to truth-test thoughts, but will focus most of the attention on EMDR to desensitize/delink and rewire the brain's associations with negative and recurrent themes. She will also incorporate mindfulness/meditation to calm the nervous system and help invite regulation, as well as ART therapies. Her goal is to shift clients from surviving to thriving. In her time away from work, she enjoys researching (Polyvagal theory, somatic awareness, EMDR techniques) reading non-fiction and fiction, spending time with family and friends, doing yoga, teaching yoga, connecting with trees, playing with our family's pets (2 dogs and 2 cats), collecting intergenerational stories and wisdom from extended family members, and doing service and community projects through The National Charity League and local churches.
